Rewriting

Rewriting is an opportunity to deepen what we understand about the material we create. It is the opportunity that allows craft to support impulse. It is the chance to move a project from idea to publication.

Rewriting is a skill that calls for different tools with each and every writing project. It is a muscle that strengthens once we realize that story elements such as structure or pace are directly influenced by the weather, the topography; a gesture made or one denied.

Rewriting is also recursive. It is the gift that keeps on giving. The more focused attention we can give to rewriting, the stronger our first drafts we’ll be. That’s because the rewriting process is also a rewiring. Rewriting is a life-long enterprise, one that quickly and dramatically, increases our capacities as writers allowing us to exploit the fire of impulse thoroughly, provocatively and authentically.
