Vernon SSHRC IDG 2025 Research-Creation Support Material

Dear SSHRC IDG Jury,

The support material linked below demonstrates my ongoing commitment to discovering the means and method of transmuting HIV stigma and its harms via creative writing, cinema, and digital story-telling. I have been the principal investigator (writer, director) on each of these projects. These projects also demonstrate my commitment to EDI and community-building principles. Their casts and production crews are comprised of predominately underrepresented individuals.

I Got Nothing to Say (3:48, 2016) (digital film): individuals directly-impacted by HIV/AIDS appear side by side and face the camera silently. In the background, people come and go from a contemporary mall food court as the writer Albert Camus reads from his novel L’Étranger

Criminal (4:54, 2017) (digital film): An HIV+ man debates whether or not he will share his HIV status with his sex date.

looking at you, looking at me (11:07, 2017): a video installation in which five individuals directly-impacted by HIV/AIDS have been filmed knowing that the audiences watching know they have been impacted by HIV. This is one uncut and unedited take of one subject.

Patty-Cake – Staying in the Game (2:30, 2024) (digital film footage): unedited footage to be assembled into the Patty-Cake film during Phase 1 of the research project.
